No comment needed, but I will anyhow

During my blog-hiatus, I attended a conference. Now, my scientific turf is male-tilted, and this conference was, if anything, even more male-tilted, but whatever. That's just your garden-variety daily crap to live with.

HOWEVER, I was nonetheless (naively?) surprised to see the following announcement posted in giant letters on the blackboard in the conference room:
Soccer- Team World vs Team Europe
Wednesday 2pm (Friendly) Girls and senior citizens welcome
Thursday 2pm (Intense)
For fuck's sake, people. For fuck's sake.

Blimey, that's pretty offensive - in many ways. And no gay people allowed, I guess (or were that included in the "girls" category)?

That made me laugh out loud :)

Welcome back btw.

Simultaneously unsurprising and outrageous.

Is it bad that I kinda sorta hope whoever wrote that took a shot to the crotch in the much ballyhooed INTENSE game. Cause that really would make it intense.

Welcome back as well.

jebus. there should be a place to anonymously post these little observations with the specifics so we know who to make fun of....

Yeah some announcements are better made anonymously. Grrrrrr.

I am going to grad school this fall. There is school that I can go to and it's mediocre, but its in-state (if I'm going to be going to classes in person it has to be in-state as I have a mortgage and have to work full time at a local job).

That being said, I can attend a more prestigious university but I can only take classes online (in fact the whole degree would be online as the school is 1,000 miles away) because of my situation. What should I do? Opinions? I know that I will get a better experience going in person and that it would be more fun, but, that being said is it worth the sacrifice in prestige? There are no prestigious universities that I can attend locally for my area.

Thanks,

Kris

I'm shocked by the blatant sexism (& ageism)...I'm kind of amused by the fact that Europe was not considered part of the "World"

Our two new (both female) postdocs are a) Canadian and b) hockey players. I will lend them to you for your next conference, and they will beat these people with hockey sticks.

They are obviously not from North Carolina, where the mens soccer games have to be scheduled before the womens so that people will bother to attend - this is for professional and collegiate soccer.

I will lend you the UNC women's soccer players to complement the Canadian hockey players. :)

Last night on the local news, in notoriously liberal city: "How much do women really know about Football?" - followed by quotes of "the quarterback is hunky" and the like. Being a woman in a mans world (sports & science) is tough business :)

Holy crap! Seriously?!

But, welcome back!

Yeah, my jaw about hit the floor. Then I hollered at one of the conference admins to fix it, which he (sort of) did. I never did find who was responsible for posting it, or I would have kicked his ass big time.

Hey Kris, I'm inclined to vote for the local less prestigious place, but it depends a bit on how different the universities are and also on what you'll be studying--is it something where hands-on experience is important?

My response to something along these lines was to join the game...which happened to be two-hand/tackle football (two-hand almost always degenerates into tackle eventually). I proceeded to bust the balls of the RB who ran a 4:30 mile. I was sore for weeks, but the respect lvl definitely went up...I think.

Girls and senior citizens? Huh? Oh, to PLAY in a friendly game, not to watch one.

Sorry. I'm girly in only a few ways, and one of them is that I don't particularly care about competitive team sports.

But I'm sure girls COULD play in the intense game, even if we're not welcome!

Just, not me. Maybe those girls from Canada & UNC.
